The city is working to fast-track instructor training throughout the summer and planning additional courses for the remainder of the year, the statement said. “Every effort was made to minimize cancellations and, where possible, staff are combining programs with low registration numbers and allocating staff to higher-demand programs,” municipal officials said in a statement. The cancellations affected approximately 1,140 participants, the city said. On Tuesday the city cancelled 169 swim courses, saying it could not find swim instructors to teach. While daily supervision is being provided at most Toronto beaches based on staff availability, Ward’s Island and Hanlan’s Point beaches will only be supervised on weekends, while Gibraltar Point will not be supervised until later in the season, he said. The city has confirmed 88 per cent of the 300 wading pool attendants it needs and 67 per cent of the 160 waterfront lifeguards required to supervise its beaches, he said. Fifty-five outdoor pools in Toronto are set open for weekend and evening swimming on June 25, and open on a full schedule starting June 30. Toronto’s director of community recreation, Howie Dayton, said the city needs about 1,100 lifeguards to supervise indoor and outdoor pool facilities but currently only has 750 confirmed. “I suspect there will be some pools that will not open this summer because of staff shortages,” she said. The labour shortage is similar to those seen in the retail sector and at airports, said Barbara Byers, a senior research officer at the Lifesaving Society, a water safety organization. Health measures meant to curb the spread of COVID-19 put lifeguard certification and recertification programs on hold, and many lifeguards moved on to new opportunities during the pandemic, they said. Municipalities across Canada are grappling with lifeguard shortages this summer in part due to the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials and industry groups said as city pools and beaches were poised to open for the season. ![]() The display on the Surface Pro 8 isn’t just bigger, it’s also faster. I always wish it was a little bigger, but considering this is a keyboard attachment, it’s surprisingly good. The touchpad, meanwhile, feels precise and smooth. The full-sized keyboard is comfortable and tactile, featuring the standard Surface keyboard layout. The keyboard and touchpad remain unchanged, which is a good thing. The new Type Cover looks and feels identical to the previous model, except with a charging slot for the Surface Slim Pen 2. More than that, it’s a brilliant idea that’s well executed. It’s extremely subtle, but it adds the slightest bit of realism to writing and illustrating. But push a little harder, and you’ll feel the sensation of artificial friction. Glide the pen across the glass lightly, and you won’t notice it. It’s the kind of thing you have to feel yourself to understand, but the slightest bit of haptic feedback is built into the pen to simulate the feeling of writing on paper. The fact that it has a place to be stored away is icing on the cake.īut the Surface Slim Pen 2 brings one significant update to the mix: Haptic feedback. The flat design fits nicely in your hand, and the lighter feel makes it less intimidating. But the Surface Slim Pen, first introduced with the Surface Pro X, is a fantastic alternative. ![]() The original Surface Pen was round and heavy, create to simulate the feeling of using a real pen. Accessing your storage doesn’t get much easier than that. Under the kickstand, you’ll find a small panel that can be accessed using a SIM card eject pin. Like all recent Surface Pros, the Surface Pro 8 includes quick access to the storage. Unfortunately, all these ports are located on the same side, meaning you don’t have a power connection on the left side at all. The Surface Pro 8 includes two of these ports, along with the Surface Dock magnetic connection, and a headphone jack. Thunderbolt 4 can also charge up and power the device. Thunderbolt 4 means the fastest transfers, the best docking experience, and the ability to connect to high-powered external devices. The Surface Pro 8 finally features Thunderbolt 4, which is a first for the Surface Pro line. Microsoft doesn’t have the best history with ports, but the Surface Pro 8 is making amends. I’m delighted to see those changes come to the Surface Pro 8, though, modernizing the design and more closely matching the size of the 12-inch iPad Pro. Many of these changes were first made in the original Surface Pro X, which launched back in 2018. It’s nice to have a permanent spot for the stylus to (hopefully) avoid losing it so much. It charges here, and can even be hidden away when you raise the keyboard. The biggest change is that the new Surface Slim Pen 2 fits brilliantly into the slot above the keyboard. The Type Cover, which is still sold separately, also has been updated. But the 1.5-pound iPad Pro does feel more portable in comparison, and won’t strain your wrist as much while holding it one-handed. I’m not saying it’s a chore to use the Surface Pro 8 as a tablet - far from it. Still, when you compare it to the iPad Pro, the extra girth makes the Surface Pro 8 more difficult to handle as a tablet. By trimming the bezels surrounding the screen, Microsoft squeezes as much extra screen real estate into the device without growing the overall dimensions too noticeably. The Surface Pro 8 now has a 13-inch screen, up from 12.3 inches in the previous model. The second reason for the larger size? Well, it has a significantly larger screen. The Surface Pro was always a rigid device, but I’m sure the change to aluminum helps in that regard as well. Microsoft says this is a more sustainable method, as well as providing the device with a more premium finish. First, the Surface Pro 8 is made out of recycled aluminum instead of magnesium. That’s never a good thing when it comes to a tablet that’s meant to be held one-handed.īut there are two legitimate reasons for the larger dimensions. It’s 0.04 inches thicker at 0.37 inches and 0.22 pounds heavier. However, the Surface Pro 8 is slightly larger and heavier than the Surface Pro 7. It has the same iconic kickstand, the same overall shape, and connects to the Type Cover keyboard in the same way. If you don’t have the Surface Pro 8 set up next to the previous year’s model, you might not recognize the difference at first. The price increase aside, the Surface Pro 8 is a near-perfect 2-in-1, which is finally a category of product that is starting to live up to its potential. Preloaded with the brand new Windows 11, the Surface Pro 8 feels like a device that has a chance of taking on the iPad Pro. That’s exactly what the Surface Pro 8 is - and it couldn’t have arrived at a better time. ![]() Now, here are the best nerdy backgrounds we’ve found so far: You can also swap between background images by clicking that Plus symbol again and choosing another background image file. A frantic and piercing solo is the cherry on top.Ī really enjoyable album, the latter half the album sees the sermon reach fever pitch after two short ambient numbers (Oath of Exile and Enslave the Heathens). Deep booming doom giving way to some deliciously old-school metal rhythm. It’s the perfect precursor to the gothic tones of the evil sounding Christ is Dead, one of the album highlights.įollowing that is the epic-ness of The Snake Handler. Our Reverend’s Grave then combines both for a morose but clean sounding track before Epochal Vestiges delights with a short folky/mysterious sounding intermission. Key of Solomon then brings the doom like rain clouds appearing suddenly to ruin a bright and sunny day. With a plethora of head-banging guitar work, old-school clean vocals and a flair for the darker side of metal, The Ninth Templar (Black Candle Flame) is deviously old-school. A sermon bathed in doom and heavy metal, it’s as thrilling as it is dark. Taking the second word of their name quite literally, The Ruins of Fading Light is a sermon. The Ruins of Fading Light will be released on the 13th September 2019 via Dark Descent Records. Still, one message echos as Crypt Sermon march onward, “We’re doomed.” Between thundering riffs and plaintive acoustic moments, the music explores new territories on the landscape of epic doom and heavy metal. The lyrics explore the limits of faith and family, life and loss, strength and pride. A follow up to 2015’s critically acclaimed debut Out of the Garden, The Ruins of Fading Light is a collection of existential meditations set to the backdrop of looming, apocryphal vestiges from a lost dark age. This focus on leadership development has always been important to both founders, but it is a particular passion of Hutchison. The Academy currently offers courses in 17 languages and averages over a thousand course completions a day. The inCruises Leadership Academy was an integral part of the company’s field team training program prior to 2020 but expanded significantly last year. We tripled the number of courses that we offered and did what we profess.” The decision to write that book is what prompted us also to triple down in the area of leadership development. “(I suggested) they start sharing excerpts on social media and let that be the conversation-that you’re trying to help, you’re trying to give back. “I wrote an e-book called SOS, How to Survive in Turbulent Times and put it out to our teams,” he says. So, we could afford to go the distance.”Īs a lifelong advocate of leadership and positivity, Hutchison knew he could serve the inCruises team in even more ways. Our model is very flexible, our cost basis is very low, and we’re debt-free. It was obvious from the very beginning that we were going to make it through. And they all wanted to know if we were going to weather the storm. “We have many-bank processors all over the world, financial providers, payouts, all kinds of things. “We met with every single financial partner we have,” adds Codina. Codina and Hutchison decided to advance payments to the cruise lines, negotiate cruise credits and found new ways to support their cruise line Partners. We gave people that sense of certainty that we were there to take care of them.”Ĭustomer refunds were only part of inCruises’ thoughtful response to a difficult season. We did not give them a future cruise credit or a travel voucher, like so many others did. We refunded our customers, so one hundred percent of our customers who asked for a cruise booking refund, we gave it to them, in cash. “They wanted to hang on to that revenue and keep it on their books. “When the pandemic hit, airlines and hotels and cruises all decided not to give refunds,” says Hutchison. The inCruises field team is made up of almost 100,000 “Partners” who join the company’s Independent Partner Program to earn commissions, bonuses and other incentives by referring new Members. These Cruise Credits are then redeemed for cruises booked through the inCruises system, giving Members exclusive access to prices the company has negotiated with more than 5,000 cruises around the world. The company was officially launched in January 2016, offering a membership that costs $100 per month, earning Members 200 Cruise Credits for every payment. That’s what I think emotionally brought us all together.”įrom the very beginning, they believed their idea was a “company of destiny” and dreamed up inCruises, a cruise membership program that serves families all over the world. “Frank and I hit it off with the pain and frustration that the average families can’t go on vacations,” he says. I can’t do the financial part and the technical part and also be the spokesperson.”Ĭoincidentally, Hutchison had just walked away from a prospective travel technology venture overseas and was looking to shake up the travel industry as well. I needed somebody who’s really good at communications and marketing because I can’t do everything. “We love to cruise and we said, ‘Hey, let’s think of the cruise industry as a potential positive disruption and do something innovative.’ We thought about a Membership model, and I realized that I was going to need a strong partner. “Cruising is a passion of mine and my wife and our boys,” Codina explains. The two men had known each other for years but had never collaborated until lightning struck in 2015. Hutchison had largely focused on leadership development, both in his work with Tony Robbins early in his career and later as a consultant and author. Codina, an industry veteran of nearly three decades, was coming off the heels of a business launch that didn’t quite measure up to his expectations. They understand that 'this information is important, and I need to pay attention to it.' Make sure it catches their eye. When paired with a powerful image, they create an impression with the person viewing it. Large, bolded, or colored text treatments give emphasis to meaningful words and phrases. This tip is for those who want to call out certain words or ideas. You don't want to overwhelm anyone reading your slides. Each slide needs to have the amount of text necessary to convey a concept quickly. We live in a time where our eyes skim over content. It sounds nitpicky, but keeping the logo in the same place and using the same color scheme on each slide prevents people from becoming distracted. Inconsistent branding confuses people as they try to make sense of your presentation. If you feel that it really needs it, try limiting the animation to only text and use one effect. I suggest not using animation in your decks at all. Too much animation draws attention away from the deck's content.Įven worse, if you aren't there to give the presentation in person, chances are high that it won't appear correctly.
